Asturias Museum of Mining and Industry
At the Museum of Mining and Industry of Asturias (MUMI), you will discover how coal and Asturian factories helped shape modern society.
A brief history of
our origins
MUMI was conceived in the late 1980s, a challenging period for Asturias in the midst of industrial and mining restructuring. It was founded with three main goals:
- Safeguard the industrial cultural heritage that has shaped Asturian identity since the 19th century.
- Support the development of communities hardest hit by economic transition.
- Diversify the regional economy of Asturias.
The site chosen for its construction was the former slag heap of the San Vicente Coal Mine (Pozo San Vicente) in L’Entregu / El Entrego, right in the heart of the Asturian mining basins.
since
the origin
The starting point
Industrial coal mining dramatically altered the rhythm of Asturias starting in the late 18th century. Rural farming and livestock communities watched as mine openings, headframes, factories, and railway lines emerged, reshaping both the landscape and its sounds as industrialization advanced. From that moment on, the changing seasons no longer set the pace of daily life. Instead, it was the turullu—the siren signaling work shifts—that dictated the rhythm of entire towns and organized family life.
A pioneering museum
MUMI was among the first museums in Spain to recognize the cultural value of mining and industrial heritage.
Opened on March 4, 1994, it presented a groundbreaking experience for its era through working machinery, scale models, and audiovisual displays.
It later added a simulated Mine, giving visitors a firsthand look at the technologies and working conditions inside underground galleries.
Commitment and evolution
We continue our work to research, preserve, and share the mining and industrial heritage of Asturias through a modern lens. Our goal is to stay closely connected with society, bringing in perspectives and values that matter to people today.
A living legacy
The museum also serves as a space to explore the present and future of industry and mining in Asturias. Through our exhibits and public programs, we critically examine the ongoing shifts and challenges facing these sectors.
