A Witness to Labor History

Pozo San Vicente stands as a key symbol of Asturian mining and industrial heritage. The site hosted Spain’s first worker self-management experiment—one of the earliest in Europe—and remains an emblem of mining culture and its values of hard work and social awareness.

History

In operation since the late 19th century, its most notable chapter took place in 1926, when the Union of Miners of Asturias (SOMA) took direct management of the site. This period ended in 1937, though the mine continued operating until 1970.

Cultural Value

The site is currently closed to the public, but work is underway to open it for visits soon so the public can discover this key chapter in labor history.
